Ryder: Outlaw Souls MC (Book 1)
Chapter 1: Ryder
WHEN LILY AND I FIRST MOVED TO LA PLAYA AFTER OUR parents died, all I could afford was a one-room apartment in the worst part of town. She was eleven, and I was eighteen, barely out of high school, with no clue how to raise a kid.
But what choice did I have? Our parents left us nothing. No money. No family. It was either me or foster care, and that wasn’t happening.
So while my friends packed their bags for college, I got a
job at Ortega’s Autos and tried to learn a trade. Lily went
from being a happy kid to just another girl trying to survive
middle school without falling apart. We were on our own—
two kids trying to stay alive.
Now, I sat on the beach, watching the first light break
over the horizon, my boots half-buried in the sand. The
weight of my leather cut rested on my shoulders, familiar
and heavy. It wasn’t just a jacket. It was a symbol of the
family that took me in when I had no one else.
The day I started working at Ortega’s changed everything. Joining the Outlaw Souls MC gave me and Lily a new chance at life. It wasn’t perfect, but it was better than being alone.
The buzzing of my phone pulled me out of my thoughts.
Hawk’s name lit up the screen.
I swiped to answer and pressed the phone to my ear.
“What did you find?” I asked, standing up and brushing the sand off my jeans. “Anyone seen Lily?”
Hawk, one of the most dependable brothers we had,
never missed a thing. When things went sideways, Hawk
was the first person we called. That’s why, after getting home from the Blue Dog last night and finding Lily gone—again—I called him.
His voice was calm but direct. “Chalupa spotted her at
the Point. She was with that Las Balas prospect.”
Fury ripped through me.
“What the fuck is she doing with them?” I growled,
clenching my jaw so hard it ached. She knew better. Every
brother in the club warned her to stay away from Las Balas.
They weren’t just trouble—they were our enemies.
Hawk sighed on the other end of the line. “There’s
nothing more dangerous than a sixteen-year-old girl with a woman’s body and a rebellious streak. Yoda told you that the first time she ran off with that kid.”
I muttered a curse under my breath. “Thanks, Hawk. I’ll
wait for her at the complex.”
I wanted to jump on my bike and head straight to the
Point. But she probably wasn’t there anymore. If she was
with that prospect, she’d be holed up somewhere I couldn’t reach without making things worse—some scumbag’s place, letting him put his hands on her.
Just the thought made my blood boil.
My hands twitched at my sides, fists curling tight. If I got anywhere near that punk, I wouldn’t stop until there was
nothing left of him.
As I turned back toward my bike, I caught sight of a
blonde beach bunny kissing some surfer in a wetsuit. She
giggled, brushing sand off his chest. “Let’s get a smoothie
before class…”
That should have been Lily.
She should be worrying about college and smoothies,
not getting tangled up in the middle of an MC war. I
clenched my jaw, watching them walk off, carefree and easy.
I wanted that life for her. I wanted her to have something
better. But instead, she was out there, risking everything
with some idiot who didn’t care if she got caught in the
crossfire.
I ran a hand through my hair and stared out at the
waves, the weight of everything pressing down on me. I
tried. God, I tried. But every step forward felt like two steps back.
Maybe it’s not too late, I thought, a flicker of something
dangerously close to hope rising in my chest. Maybe there’s still a way to give her the life she deserves.
But if things were going to change, I had to act now—
before I lost her for good.
I swung my leg over my bike, the leather seat cold
against my thighs. Time to go home and wait. If she didn’t
show up soon, I’d find her. And God help that Las Balas kid
when I did.
