Finn – Age 18

The trailer was already half gone when I kicked the door in.

Smoke poured out like a living thing, wrapping around my face, filling my lungs, making it impossible to breathe, to think. Flames crawled along the ceiling like hungry fingers. The floor groaned beneath my boots. I was too late.

“Sean!”

I shouted his name so loud it shredded my throat, but there was no answer. Just the shriek of metal, the crack of something collapsing in the back, and the distant wail of sirens—always ten minutes too slow in this part of town.

Then I saw him.

Curled up in the hallway, blood blooming across his shirt like a spreading ink stain. His head was tilted at an angle that made my stomach twist.

“No.”

I dropped to my knees beside him, grabbed his face, tried to shake him awake. “Sean, come on. Come on, man—talk to me.”

His eyes fluttered. Just for a second. Enough to break me.

“Finn…” he croaked, barely a whisper.

“I’m here. I’m right here.”

He coughed—wet, ragged. Blood at the corner of his mouth. “Don’t trust… he’s not who he… says…”

“What? Who—who, Sean?”

But that was it. His chest stopped moving. Just like that, my brother—my only family—was gone.

The heat slammed into me from behind, forcing me to shield his body with mine. If the fire didn’t kill me, the guilt would. I could taste it already—acrid, bitter, permanent.

I don’t know how I got out. I must’ve carried him. Or dragged him. I remember the searing pain in my hands, the sting of glass in my knees, the way the front steps cracked beneath me as the flames burst through the windows.

I laid his body in the dirt like he was sleeping. Like it wasn’t too late.
